Did you say…

  1. Land limitations

We don’t have endless space in Aotearoa or anywhere else. Trees need specific conditions to grow, and we can’t just plant them anywhere we like.

  2. Food versus forests

If we use all our land for trees, where will we grow our kai (food)? We can’t survive on just kōwhai seeds and manuka honey.

  3. Trees aren’t immortal

Trees don’t live forever. When they die, they release the carbon they’ve stored back into the atmosphere.

A tree.

The big picture

Planting trees is great, but it's not a magic solution. We'd need to plant so many trees that:

  • People might have to move house
  • Farmers could lose their jobs
  • We'd quickly run out of suitable land

Plus, trees are picky – they can't grow just anywhere – they're not keen on super-cold, super-hot, or bad soil.
