Can carbon dioxide be absorbed from the atmosphere?

Did you know that there are ways CO₂ is absorbed so that it doesn’t all stay in the atmosphere? Some parts of our planet, oceans and forests can absorb CO₂ and can store it for hundreds and thousands of years.

Trees and plants are amazing at soaking up CO₂. They store most of it in their roots, in permafrost (ground that stays frozen year-round), grasslands, and forests.

This process is called photosynthesis, where they absorb CO₂ and produce oxygen, which we need to breathe! The average tree can gobble up 24kg of CO₂ each year!

Trees

Now, let's do some maths together. Can you figure out how many trees we'd need to soak up all the CO₂ from my school journeys with my friends? It's like a puzzle, but with trees and carbon! Here’s the info you need:

  • Together, my friends and I make about 369kg of CO₂ in a year just from our school trips
  • One tree can absorb 24kg of CO₂ each year
