How can a carbon footprint can be measured?

We can measure our carbon footprint or greenhouse gas emissions in grams (g), kilograms (kg) and tonnes (t) of CO₂.

Almost everything we do has a carbon footprint. Check out these mind-boggling facts:

  • A 5-minute shower emits 200g CO₂
  • A light on for an hour emits 3–19g CO₂
  • A computer on for 8 hours a day emits 70g CO₂
  • The heat pump or heater on for an hour emits 200g CO₂
  • Driving 1km (kilometre) in a medium-sized petrol car emits 192g CO₂

Yikes! It adds up fast, doesn’t it? So, the bigger the carbon footprint, the more damaging it is to our planet.
